Honda RA300

The Honda RA300 was a Formula One racing car produced by Honda Racing, and introduced halfway through the 1967 Formula One season. It retained the same V12 engine as the preceding RA273 car, but the chassis was designed by Lola's Eric Broadley and based on a previous Lola Indianapolis 500 car. This collaboration resulted in the machine being quickly dubbed the Hondola by the motorsports press.

Broadley's chassis was much lighter and sweeter handling than the previous in-house design. The car initially performed impressively, winning in its first ever World Championship race at the 1967 Italian Grand Prix. Driver John Surtees took the lead from Jim Clark's Lotus and Jack Brabham's Brabham on the final lap, after Clark ran out of fuel and Brabham ran wide. However, the RA300 flattered to deceive, and this would turn out to be the only lap that an RA300 would lead, and it never again took a World Championship victory. It remains the only F1 car ever to take its single victory in its very first Grand Prix, and on the only lap it would ever lead.

The remainder of the 1967 season saw Surtees collect only three more points, with a fourth place at the 1967 Mexican Grand Prix. The car was superseded in the following season by the Honda RA301, a design closely based on the RA300. However, this did not improve Honda's results, Surtees only managing to finish four of the season's twelve events.

On display at the IAA exhibition in Frankfurt, 2007.

The 48-valve V12 Honda first appeared at the 1966 Italian GP driven by Richie Ginther (USA). In spite of weighing 740 kg (dry) it was capable of spinning the rear tyres at 100 mph in third gear. With cylinder dimensions of 78.0 x 52.2 mm 2,993.17 cc, a target of 400-440 bhp @ 12,000 rpm was quoted. The engine used by John Surtees at the 1967 Italian GP was quoted by Motoring News as developing only 396 bhp, but with improved torque and response. The vehicle weight excess over the 500 kg minimum had been approximately halved.

If you prefer to draw your inspiration from 1950s Stuttgart, look no further than The Tygan Motor Company who have been producing their gorgeous “Speedster” 356 replica since acquiring the project from Chesil. The car oozed retro charm with white-wall tyres, lashings of chrome and an immaculate cream leather interior. It was surely one of the prettiest vehicles on show, with fabulous attention to detail and a high level of finish. Mechanically speaking, the trusty VW Beetle base is used; with a range of engines options available from a standard 1300cc Vee-dub unit to a 3.2 litre 911 engine. Prices start at £3,950 for the basic kit and the total build costs are estimated at around £25,000. The company says they have big plans for expansion in the near future, including the release of a Porsche 550 Spider replica and rumours of an entirely new

Any faithful reader of HOT BIKE magazine undoubtedly has heard of Matt Hotch, one of the motorcycle industry's most famous and prolific bike builders. It's no accident that Matt was crowned by the Discovery Channel as a Biker Build-Off champion, not just once, but an unprecedented two times. This put Matt into a rare class of thinkers and builders, earning him the "Grand Champion" moniker in the process. His first Build-Off champion bike, named "Chingon," highlighted Matt's "perfection is possible" philosophy.

Hotch's clean building vision acquired its roots not in his present California location, but in his original Minnesota stomping grounds. When he was a kid, his parents moved to Southern California. He was riding minibikes by the time he was 10 years old and soon learned how to fix what he broke. This led to building mini-bikes, followed by go-carts. As a teenager with low funds, Matt turned to the performance possibilities of Volkswagens, not only for fun but also to get around. He started buying V-Dubs for parts and to make some money, eventually building many of the fastest hot rods in the area. It was this woodshedding that enabled him to boost his skills as a mechanic and metal fabricator.

It's quite a journey from his humble roots to an being an internationally recognized master bike builder. It was on Matt's first Discovery Channel Build-Off episode that New York native Andrew Borak first got an idea for his next bike. He loved Chingon and contacted Matt to see if it was for sale. It wasn't-but Matt said he'd gladly build Andrew a better one. The deal was set, funds were transferred, and the torch was fired up.
Starting with an Independent Cycles frame, Matt got to work, cutting it to pieces but keeping the neck and some of the downtubes and framerails to hold the motor. The same went for the swingarm, which Matt fabbed and molded to his liking. This bike was designed to sit on its lower framerails when parked, a feat that's accomplished with airbags in the rear and air in the front forks. The 12-inch-over Perse frontend has 10 inches of travel in the longer-than-stock fork legs, while ride height is a respectable 5-1/2 inches during cruising. A lot of effort went into making this bike handle well while preserving its radical appearance.

Bolted between the forks is a 23-inch wheel wrapped in a Vee Rubber skin, while the rear Metal Motorsports wheel is a more common 18x280 Metzeler. Performance Machine was called upon for the front braking duties, while a trick transmission brake from ProFab slows the rear. This braking system uses a small rotor placed inboard the rear chain and sprocket and is clamped by a mini-caliper in much the same way as a traditional hydraulic brake. This setup gives the rear wheel a very sanitized appearance, with the sprocket being the only part bolted to the rear wheel.

Matt fabricated all of the sheetmetal for "El Rey" (the name of this bike) before having Marcos at Lucky 7 lay down the Chingon Blue paint. Once the bike was completed, Matt overnighted it to New York to meet its new owner at Andrew's Hampton house. To make the arrival of the bike more special, Matt was flown by helicopter to the beach house to make sure El Rey was all that Andrew had wanted. He was ecstatic, loving the bike that was inspired by Matt's award-winning Build-Off bike

A Racing Legend Is Reborn

A Racing Legend Is Reborn
A Racing Legend Is Reborn
Before McLaren was a huge operation based in England and a technological partner with the likes of Mercedes and Porsche, it was a racing car company founded and run by two blokes from New Zealand. Together they built some damn fine racing cars.

The Can-Am cars built and raced by Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme were so dominant people took to calling the no-limits racing series “The Bruce & Denny Show.” Only combined might of Mark Donohue and Roger Penske with full support from Porsche could unseat the two Kiwis and their mighty McLaren M1C.

Forty years later the M1C remains an amazing car, and now a German outfit is making spot-on replicas and selling them to people like us.

Can-Am (formally known as the Canadian-American Challenge Cup) was big in the late 1960s. It was an anything-goes environment with little in the way of technical regulations or rules. Two seats, enclosed wheels and basic safety equipment were pretty much the only requirements. It wasn’t unusual to see cars with huge wings, sucker motors, semi-automatic gearboxes and even titanium frames. The most unbelievable technology was thrown at the age-old question of “How can we make it go faster,” and the results were amazing.

McLaren was the first, and most dominant, team in Can-Am. The cars were always Kiwi orange — the national racing color of New Zealand — and usually powered by Chevrolet V8 engines (though some had Ford or even Oldsmobile mills). They started with the venerable small block but later pushed big-block engines to power and torque levels so extreme that even the seemingly fearless Hulme was once heard to say of the McLaren M8, “Maybe we got too much.”

The M1C was the last of the McLaren tube-frame cars before the team moved on to monocoques. It had a small-block engine outfitted with four 48 IDA carburetors. It cranked out 500 horsepower — an ungodly amount for a 355 cubic-inch engine in the late 60s. The engine was a stressed stressed member of the chassis. Out of the box the M1C offered jaw-dropping performance thanks to its overall weight of just under 600 kilos. McLaren built 25 M1Cs in 1966 and ‘67 and sold them as the McLaren Elva Mark III.

And now, an outfit in Germany called LMP Engineering is recreating this sweet car to highlight its knowledge of 3D-CAD hybrid modeling software, CAD/CAM production technologies, 3D-Tube laser cutting, 3D-machining, surface scanning. They’ve built one already and will produce others “for interested fans of the Can-Am racing series.”

The LMP replica is a stunning work of art, the kind of car you enjoy looking at as much as driving. We’ll take one. In Kiwi orange, of course.
